World Wetland Day


On 1st February, 2018 various activities for school children and local community were organized in Government Senior Secondary School, Guglara, District Kangra. Around 700 students and teachers of 42 different schools on the periphery of Pong Dam wetland and local residents were present. Sh. Arjun Singh, Hon’ble MLA, Jawali was the Chief. Guest Sh. Kunal Satyarthi, Member Secretary, HIMCOSTE welcomed the Chief Guest and briefed about the wetland conservation programme and its objectives to the participants. Sh Arjun Singh urged the students, teachers and public to protect the wetland eco system.

Painting competition for junior and senior categories, Swachhata and Bird watching activities for students and teachers were also organized.

The State-Level function on World Wetland Day-2018 was held at Mini Secretariat, Jawali, Distt. Kangra, H.P. on 2nd February, 2018. Sh. Jai Ram Thakur, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Himachal Pradsh presided over the function. Sh. Vipin Singh Parmar, Hon’ble Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Science and Technology, Sh. Vikram Thakur, Hon’ble Minister for Industries were the Guests of Honour. Sh. Arjun Thakur, Hon’ble MLA, Jawali, Smt. Rita Dhiman, Hon’ble MLA, Indora, Sh. Ravinder Kumar, Hon’ble MLA, Jaisinghpur, Smt. Manisha Nanda, Additional Chief Secretary (Environment, Science & Technology, Information & Public Relations, Tourism & Civil Aviation)-cum-Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh were Special Guests on this occasion. Sh. R.C. Kang, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife), Sh. Sanjeeva Pandey, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Sh. Sandeep, Deputy Commissioner, Kangra, Sh. Santosh Patiyal, Superintendent of Police, Kangra, Sh. D.C. Rana, Special Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Conservator of Forest, Hamirpur, Divisional Forest Officers were also present on this occasion.

Smt. Manisha Nanda, Additional Chief Secretary (Environment, Science and Technology, Information and Public Relations, Tourism and Civil Aviation)-cum-Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh welcomed the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and other dignitaries. She spoke on the importance of World Wetlands Day celebrations and measures taken to create public awareness about the values of wetlands. She highlighted the crucial role of wetlands and their presence as important features in the landscape that provides numerous beneficial services like improving water quality, providing fish and wildlife habitats like migratory birds, storing floodwaters and maintaining surface water flow during dry periods. She also told that the Himachal Pradesh State Wetland Authority (HPSWA) has been constituted in the year 2017 to coordinate the Wetland Conservation Programme with the active participation of all the stakeholders.

Sh. Jai Ram Thakur, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh said that it is the responsibility of each citizen of the globe to commit himself and contribute for wetland conservation. This year’s theme “Wetlands for sustainable urban future” prompts all of us to think how we can contribute to rejuvenate the shrinking wetlands which is posing a serious threat to the wellbeing of this crucial ecosystem. He told that the Government was committed to conserve and protect the wetlands of State and a wetland atlas would be prepared for existing wetlands of Himachal Pradesh. He urged various departments like, forests, tourism, fisheries, animal husbandry, and administration to have coordinate efforts in conservation of wetlands and in using the various services like tourism, fisheries, irrigation etc. He gave the prizes to the winners students of Painting & Bird Watching competitions organized on 1st February, 2018.
